Astrid found that she was eager to begin, excited at the prospect of doing something so human, but so different for her. She was eager for a human experience that she didn't stumble across by accident and she was excited at the prospect of working with someone when it wasn't centered around a case or around saving someone's life. Astrid was comfortable and Joan's gratitude made her desire to indulge in the task grow and she found herself coming closer to Rin. When the brunette placed a hand on her shoulder the contact was almost a shock to her and she tilted her head to spare a glance at the touch. It was comforting and she felt her heart clench in unexplainable emotion and she had to swallow a few times to keep her feelings in control. Today was truly a day for new experiences and when Rin moved over to interact with Joan she found herself observing. Taking in the way that the other girl with such ease offered her comfort in the form of simple touches, such as brushing her hand across shoulders or a soft kiss to the cheek.
"I agree with you" Astrid's voice had fallen down to the almost whisper that she often used when she was feeling strongly about something. She had never been one to yell, or to trigger anger in her passion. When it came down to it her voice was soft and intimate, never raising beyond a quiet expression and that alone seemed to send her message across most of the time. After everything that had happened in heaven and during her time on Earth she had learned that yelling was often times not the way to get people to listen.
"Joan is a very strong woman, I can tell that she has been through very much in her life time. She has seen both joy and sorrow and her soul is strong. She feels everything so powerfully"
Astrid had observed this in awe. One angelic quality that had stuck with her was the ability to feel emotions, as she drew her focus to certain points she was able to feel people's emotions in waves and though she could block it out, almost as if flipping a switch, it was not often that she did. It was very helpful to understand people when she could feel what they were feeling. Joan's emotions were easy for her to read, not because Joan was an open woman but because she felt everything so strongly. It was part of what made her such a good person, she knew how to feel and how to react to her emotions. Astrid had seen the today especially.
Astrid's attention snapped back into place when Rin guided her back behind the counter to show her various techniques of bar tending. The fallen angel was extremely focused and kept her ears trained on the girl in order to take in everything she was saying. She wanted to do this well and she had the ability to learn things quickly. She was able to easily retain her instructions and she allowed her hands to reach out and experiment with what Rin was showing her. There was a correct location for all of the bottles and they needed to be kept in that order so Astrid paid close attention to little details such as that. The writings on the menu confused her a bit, she was fairly sure that it was supposed to be humorous but she did not feel as if she should ask so she just tilted her head slightly in confusion. She knew nothing about cooking so seeing various sauces being made and food being created was very interesting to her and she found herself at one point closing her eyes and enjoying the different scents that passed over her. Than she would find herself opening her eyes and glancing down at Rin's hands as she cut and mixed different ingredients to make different foods and Astrid found herself fascinated with the entire ordeal. It had never crossed her mind to consider the many different aspects of restaurants and the work put into them and she found herself really enjoying learning about them. When Rin spoke she lifted her head back up to glance into blue eyes.
"I was here on a case. It's not often that I stop between cases but I found myself growing weary after the last one and needed to stop for a bit. I was not expecting any more attacks so I am glad I was there to help"
She paused for a moment and watched Rin continue to work. Each move of her hands moved with precision and it was now obvious to her that she had not been lying when she claimed she had done this her entire life. Astrid also noticed that she seemed to be genuinely enjoying the work she was doing, at that Astrid felt her lips quirking up into a small smile. It did not escape her notice that she was also enjoying herself.
"May I ask you the same? "

Rin gave Astrid a sidelong smile, her hands never stopped moving as she chopped and crushed, dumped things into pots and ran them through the big food processor. She really had been doing this since the age that most kids are learning how to microwave Hot Pockets, it was as natural as breathing. "I was driving by and saw it and thought it looked hilarious. All rundown and funny, like the definition of 'dive'. I wanted to come in and look around, maybe sneak a few pictures to email to my Dad and laugh over."
She shook her head as she used a board scraper to get the last of the tomatoes into the pot of chili, then dumped the dried anchos, chipotles, and chiles de arbol she'd been soaking in beer over low heat into the food processor to grind into a slurry. "I had no idea until I looked around and saw all the protective symbols everywhere. I'd known there were hunter's bars around, but nobody was ever willing to tell me where they were."
It seemed to be just as natural for her to show Astrid how to use two salad forks to break down blue cheese into crumbles as it was for her to start beating up her mother sauces that would turn into the salad dressings they served that night (Rin believed that bottled salad dressings were the work of Satan. Possibly literally, given new information.), and chat happily at the same time.
After a bit, the prep cook Mike showed up, he was a young guy with a wide, infectious smile and the distinctive flattened features of Navajo blood, and Rin wrapped him into her circle just as naturally and with just as much confidance that she had the right to laugh with him and tease him and order him around.
The three of them worked to get the kitchen prepped, with help from Yesenia when she arrived, and by four o' clock were ready to open up the doors for the first of the dinner service.
It was a long, busy, high-energy shift. The Trap didn't usually get too loud or rowdy, not with locals anyway, but the combination of hot blonde bartender, sassy waitress in tight jeans, and the novelty of the night's menu had people calling their friends to join. It turned into a loud, laughing, half-rowdy night and Rin and Astrid both had the opportunity to witness first hand that knee brace or not, Wes was still a hell of a bouncer.
When they finally chased the last of the customers out at 2:45, Wes took the cash bag and the night's receipts and went to drop those at the bank and give Yesenia a ride home, leaving Mike cleaning up the kitchen as Rin came out, her hair up in a messy ponytail after a night of sweat and steam and fry oil, carrying one of the brown plastic service trays loaded with baskets of fries and sandwiches, a big pitcher of sweet iced tea and two glasses full of ice.
She set it all down on the big six-top next to the open window that was letting in cool desert air, and gestured for Astrid to come over and join her. "Grab a bottle of Jim Beam, we'll dose up the tea? I think we've earned it." Rin had made a sandwich of sharp cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, and sliced avocado for Astrid (the vegetarian thing had come up during prep), a burger for herself with plenty of fries for both of them.
Collapsing down into the chair, Rin gave Astrid a tired smile. "So, how'd you like your first shift slinging drinks? Make any good tips?"

"I am glad you stumbled upon this place than. You have done very much today and helped out in many ways, I can tell Joan is very appreciative. After a kill I often feel weary, but you seemed to have helped with that as well"
Astrid's words were honest and kind and she turned her head to the side to make eye contact with the brunette to make sure that she understood that. There was a soft smile on her lips and Astrid quickly brushed her shoulder with her hand, trying to also show by touch that she was pleased with their forming friendship. It was not long however, until their companionable silence that followed was broken but the arrival of the other two works, and soon after that the costumers.
Astrid felt good, there was a certain sense of urgency involved with running the bar that was almost satisfying. More than once she found herself having to run over what Rin had showed her earlier. There had been a large dinner rush and she had found herself enjoying it and she had done the work as best as she could though she had little knowledge and experience of bar-tending. Astrid also found that she got along very well with the other too. Yesenia was beautiful and kind and she liked her immediately. She also found that she really enjoyed Mike's presence, his smile was open and honest and the few times that she had stumbled a bit he would approach her in the kitchen and gently guide her back on track when Rin was to busy to do that herself. The four of them had worked very well together and Astrid found herself enjoying the human company and she found that it was the first time she had considered connections here on Earth. Her family in heaven had been her only companions before, even than however, they had fought together and been soldiers together and it was not much more than that. Astrid felt the happiness settle in her chest and she smiled again.
After it was all over she followed Rin over the open window and sipped her drink which she also found she quite enjoyed. Her new friend had also made her a sandwich and after such a shift the food tasted better, it also was most likely because of Rin's experience with food but Astrid found herself thanking her quietly and happily eating her sandwich, taking it in small bites and trying to savor the taste. Astrid also found that she really enjoyed the fries and she kept reaching over to pluck them from the plate. Rin also showed her the joys of condiments. Astrid had never tried ketchup before and she found that she really enjoyed the sweet combination of it with the salty fries. When Rin began speaking to her she sat her sandwich down momentarily so that she could focus on the girl.
"I did earn a lot of tips, people were very generous tonight"
Astrid frowned for a moment, she had earned a lot of tips which she appreciated because being a human meant needing money, and it was not often that she got to stop and actually make some for herself and it felt good to accomplish something like this on her own. It made her feel very self sufficient.
"I did not only get money, but I was given papers with numbers that I assume to be phone numbers. I do not understand how that is relevant to me serving them. There was also a man who commented that he enjoyed when I had to bend to pick something up. I did not understand why. I felt foolish"
Astrid stopped and the grown fell of her face and was replaced by a smile.
"I observed that you seemed to be enjoying yourself, did your shift also go as well as you predicted it would?"

[atrb=style, width: 500px; height: 400px; background: #0a090b url(http://teaandheresy.com/moon/rin02back.jpg) no-repeat center bottom, bTable][atrb=valign,bottom][atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,15,true][atrb=style, padding: 15px; color: #aa9a90; width: 280px; background-color: #0a090b; opacity: 0.7; filter:alpha(opacity=70); border: 1px solid #857266; -moz-box-shadow: 3px 3px 12px #000;-webkit-box-shadow: 3px 3px 12px #000;box-shadow: 3px 3px 12px #000;] A low, gurgly sort of laugh and Rin poured an extra shot of Jim into both their iced teas. "You really don't get why people were slipping you phone numbers? Did they not have mirrors where you grew up?"
She settled back deeper in her chair, kicked up her feet and propped them on the seat of the next chair over. It had been a long day and though she'd taken a minute to change into trainers instead of flip-flops her feet hurt and her back was definitely letting her know that she wasn't supposed to drive seven straight hours, get terrified by a fight with a tiger-demon, and then work a ten hour kitchen shift. That, her spine wanted her to know, was Against The Rules.
Which meant that there was a sigh of relief before she said, "They want to hook up with the hot blonde bartender, clearly. I mean, think about it. There's maybe a thousand people in this town, a brand new hottie who not only looks like a character on a CW 'Pretty White Kids With Problems' show but who gives them alcohol at the same time? True love, just that fast."
Rin laughed again and took a long swallow of her spiked iced tea, knowing she needed to finish her burger but giving it a second for the bourbon-induced relaxation to happen. "I gotta admit, I had a ball tonight. I usually wait tables, I like the tips, but I'd forgotten how much fun a kitchen can be and it had been a while since I really cooked."
"The battered bacon went over big," she said, sounding more than a little smug about it. "I've been pondering that recipe forever. I knew the parcooking would be the key. I've heard of restaurants just battering it raw, but you're never going to render enough fat that way for it to actually be tasty, you're just getting the novelty factor." Yes, Rin was actually and in fact geeking on bacon.
The thought made her smile as she took another sip of tea, and she knew that when she called home tomorrow she'd end up talking to her mother for half an hour or more about the night's impromptu menu and how it had gone over. It was the one thing Rin and her Mom always had in common, the one thing they could always talk about even during the times when she was in high school that they couldn't talk about anything without fighting. Except food, food was always safe. They could always connect over it.
She and Randy would talk about the batter she'd used on the bacon, laugh over the way she'd phrased the menu items, discuss whether the pricing strategy was workable over the long term. Rin knew very well that her mother wanted her to eventually finish up her wandering and move back to St. Louis to take over the restaurant there. Randy had been just about Rin's age when she took over the manager spot, and now that Rin was old enough to hold a liquor license she strongly suspected that her mother wanted to either open a second location or start transitioning to splitting management with her daughter.
And the hell of it was that Rin suspected that she'd probably end up giving in. She was having fun on her extended vacation or whatever you'd call this journey, but it wasn't like she was doing anything tremendously important with her life. She was just traveling, meeting people, having a good time. Sometime, maybe sometime soon even, it was going to stop being satisfying and start to feel pointless, and when that happened Rin supposed she'd pack up and head back to Missouri to live the life Randy wanted for her. The thought didn't fill her with despair, not exactly. More a feeling of Not Yet. Just...not yet. She wanted a little more time to live her own way.

"No, they did not have mirrors where I grew up"
Astrid said tilting her head to the side. For the most part she was getting a hang of being a part of humanity but still there were moments where she was confused. Everything she had done as an angel had been an order, and something that had a greater purpose and there were never small insignificant details in her memory and she envied that about humans. People, such as Rin, had memories of a childhood and a mother who cooked with her, Astrid had only the memories of life as a soldier. Rin spoke again, pulling Astrid out of her thoughts and while she found she did not really understand the reference to CW but she was aware that there was an underlying compliment in there so she smiled back at the brunette none the less. She leaned back in her chair, the alcohol was not enough to inebriate her entirely, but the dull effect of a buzz was pleasant and she found herself enjoying herself still, even after all the activity had died down and it was just the two of them sitting there together while the other two bustled a bit in the background.
"I am pleased that you enjoyed yourself, I also enjoyed serving people. It seems that we make a decent team together. Our costumers also seemed to enjoy our services."
Astrid had received many compliments that night, less of them revolved around her and most of them were centered on the efficient service and the great food. Rin had done a wonderful job and Astrid many people had asked her to send compliments to the chef so Astrid took a moment to do just that, giving Rin a rundown of compliments to the chef. Many people had commented that they would enjoy coming back as well, that would be a good thing, Astrid would like to do this again sometime. She was incredibly grateful that she still had the ability of flight because that would make coming back easier. There were no long road trips and cars breaking down to worry about and no traffic and bad drivers, the standard thing that people with cars did have to deal with. Perhaps one day she would learn how to drive, or at least learn the logistics of it in case anything had to happen. Astrid prayed with all of her heart that the occasion when she needed to drive would not come up. Astrid had lost her grace and almost all of her powers, she would surely fall into a pit of misery if she lost the ability to fly. When she discovered she still had that ability it had lifted her spirit slightly from the downward spiral it had taken when she had been cast down.
"How long will you be planning on staying in this town?"
Astrid asked looking back up at her. It would be pointless to return if she was not there. While Astrid enjoyed Wes and Joan and the other companies presence, she felt there was some sort of connection between her and Rin. A sort of connection that meant she had a friend and an ally here on Earth. If the other girl were to continue on her way Astrid would do the same without looking back. That was how most hunts went anyways, this was the first time she had actually stayed for longer than she had to do and it was the first time she had ever considered coming back to one place and settling down for more than just a night. It was a nice thought though, nice to consider that perhaps there was one place that could be a sort of pseudo home for her, with company she enjoyed that she could come back too. It was idea that was pleasant to her and she found herself hoping that even if Rin left she would wish to see her again at some point in time.

That seemed...weird to her, but she took a moment to decide whether it was the kind of weird that might be a sensitive story and thought that maybe it could, so she didn't chase after it. Instead she moved easily enough to the next subject, smiling when Astrid talked about the way the clientele had received the night's changes. "Yeah, we do make a pretty awesome team, don't we? People were having a lot of fun, and we zeroed out at close to sixteen grand. I'm not sure what the average is here for a weekend night, but the way Wes was acting I think we did pretty well."
When Astrid asked how long Rin was planning on staying, the TK took a couple of bites of her burger and fries to stall while she thought that over. She had no reason to stay, really, and at least a couple of reasons to go. Anything she owed Joan for the protection in that fight she'd repaid tonight by running the restaurant, even if the old woman made good the implied offer of a free room for the night.
And yet she was inclined to stay. She felt a connection to this place, whether it was because of the fight or because of the proprietary feeling that came from taking over the kitchen for the night or because of the way Joan had stood there looking so tired, the certainty that the bartender Oso wasn't the first or the fifth or probably the fifteenth person the Scotswoman had lost to the monsters over the years. She knew nothing of Joan's story, nothing of the history of this place or how the two came to be connected but she'd caught the sends of time and ritual when Joan had greeted her with that phrase, 'always open to those as are fighting the good fight.' How many good fights had happened here over the years? How many of the scars on the walls and stains on the floor were from people fighting for their lives against something older, stronger, and far more deadly than any human being could hope to be?
She dragged a french fry through the dish of ranch she'd brought for herself and admitted, "I'm not sure how long I'm staying, but I'm thinking I'll stick around a few weeks if Joan will have me. It looks like she could use some help around here and I've got noplace else to be anytime soon." Her friends in Taos were only barely expecting her, and she could always daytrip it out to visit. "I want to learn about this stuff, and I think I could do some good here. Maybe not in a grand way, but just by helping these people do what they're doing." She wasn't sure how to explain it better than that, she just thought that what Joan and her people were doing with the Trap was probably valuable, and if she could be a part of doing that good thing, even for a little while, she wanted to be.
"How about you?" She finally bit the french fry in half, chewed and swallowed before she continued. "You thinking to stick around a bit or taking off soon?" She kind of wanted to ask Astrid to stick around, not for the bartending but because she liked the blonde, and because she felt like something important had happened here today even if she wasn't exactly sure what it was.

Rin seemed impressed with their work tonight and their earnings and it made Astrid glow with pride momentarily. It was new to have something other then a hunt to be proud of and she found that enjoyed having something else to show for herself. They truly did make a good team. Astrid tilted her head to the side and took just a moment to think. Of course she had been considering staying, for how long she could not stay for sure yet but she could come back. Astrid was live out the rest of her time here on Earth and it would not hurt to have a friend. A smile lifted at the corner of her lips and she glanced back up at Rin.
"I may stay for as long as I wish, I have to leave for hunts from time to time but I could simply leave and come back when the task is over."
She was unsure if it would be as easy as she was making it sound, but she couldn't figure out what would make it too complicated. If anything the stability would make things easier for her, plus it was not as if she had anyone to report too. Not anymore. Of course she would only stay if Rin were also going to stay, as much as the liked the other people who inhabited the bar, it was the brunette that she had made a connected with. She would have to stick around to teach Rin what she could as it was anyways, staying around was a good idea. It would give her a chance to stop and breath for a moment and learn more about humanity while also being able to teach something of her own.
Along with coming to this decision, Astrid became fully aware that she was going to have to tell Rin the truth sooner rather then later. The problem was, the fallen angel was unsure of just exactly how to go about this. So far during her time on Earth she had not told any humans what she was. For the most part she tried to be honest and kind with people, but there were not many people who wold be able to handle who she was. Rin however, though not a hunter had experienced the Supernatural and lived to tell the tale, so perhaps she would be able to handle it better then the fearful reactions Astrid always seemed to conjure up in her mind. After all, the girl had been through a lot and they already had some sort of silent understanding going on. Perhaps the girl already knew something was off about Astrid. With that decision in mind though, she opened her mouth to speak.
"I will stay as long as you are here. I feel as if I can trust you and I still want to teach you ways to defend yourself and I want to educate you about what is out there"
Astrid was pleased with that answer and she had a large pit of hope in her that was telling her that Rin was going to be up to this. In a sense they would be partners, Astrid also couldn't help but wonder if they had reached the point of friends yet. She was still so unsure of how these types of situations worked.
"Also, there is something I need to tell you. I do not wish to do it here, but it is important and I want to be able to be completely honest with you."

"I'm sticking, long as Joan will put up with me. She needs me, whether she even knows it or not." That was obvious to Rin, even if it wouldn't be to anybody else. Restaurants were in her blood, something she was only beginning to accept about herself, and she saw things about the Trap that other people would miss. The equipment in the kitchen had been good quality fifteen years ago and most of it was perfectly solid still, but there were a few things that needed fixing. If they'd put in a modern fryer it would cut down on waste, and a proper industrial dishwasher would save a lot of time. The menu needed some streamlining, it had picked up so many random items over the years as different cooks came through and added their favorites that their shopping lists had to be all over the place, and she'd bet that a good third of the items never got ordered any more.
She would get with the cook, Dino, and rework the menu to take it down to a solid three pages, two pages if they were ditching breakfast. She'd work with Yesenia to find a new bartender (assuming Astrid wasn't planning to take the gig, but she'd have to get licensed and so on and Rin was betting that the blonde didn't want to go through the hassle) and get the place pulled into shape. After that...well, she'd just see. Presumably, after that the Trap would be in a state to hand back to Joan knowing that the old woman could keep it running at the accelerated speed and income stream that Rin considered acceptable, but even now she was having a few vague doubts that she was going to be willing to just take off when the time came. There was something about this bar, these people that just made her feel...responsible.
Still, all that was trouble for another day. For the moment she was concentrating on her burger, her well-spiked sweet tea, and her conversation with Astrid.
And so she smiled at the blonde girl and said with real sincerity, "I want to learn whatever you're willing to teach me. With the TK I'm kinda floundering, trying to figure stuff out as I go. But when I ran into a demon a while back..." she shook her head, remembering the encounter with a slight shiver that ran down her spine, "silver-dipped roofing nails really don't cut it with those guys. I was way, way out of my league and just lucky that he got bored and let me run off."
But then Astrid said she had something to tell her, and Rin changed gears to smile at the blonde, lean forward and fill up her new friend's glass with a little more tea and whiskey. "Whatever you feel like you need to tell me, I'm willing to hear. I mean, after the day we've had?" She smiled at Astrid, somewhere between affectionate and wry. "How shocking could anything be? You already know that I'm a telekinetic, that I'm willing to batter-fry bacon and that I'm horrifyingly bossy. What kind of secret could you have that would be offputting after all of that?" She grinned at Astrid, trying to invite the other girl to see the absurdity of the situation and the diffidence that both of them had been holding onto sheerly as a matter of course.

"I would like to help too, if you would like"
Astrid said tilting her head to the side and considering her options. Obviously she could not make an everyday commitment to the place, there were still hunts that she could have to leave for that might take her more then just a few days, but she couldn't help but feel a spark of warmth at the thought of having somewhere to come back to. Not only that but possibly having a friend that she could come back to as well. Traveling was something she enjoyed, as a fallen angel the world was not exactly new to her, she had seen many things and had been alive long enough to see the Earth in it's creation, but she had never experienced it like this. After falling Astrid had the chance to see the World around her, as opposed to seeing it through what felt like a window. Feelings things could often get overwhelming, but she found herself enjoying it. As much as she missed heaven and home, she did not miss the feeling of being a hammer. Before she had fallen it had been such a new experience to feel, but now she found that she did not think she could ever give that up.
"Perhaps, I could find somewhere to settle in for awhile. Somewhere besides a motel at least"
She said this almost thinking allowed, she furrowed her brow and imagined herself doing such a thing. It was all very foreign territory to her. She was unsure if she would even know how to buy a house. Her income was also something of concern, her means of getting money before and been more desperate and dishonest and Astrid was pretty sure that it would not work if she wanted to stay somewhere long enough to not be kicked back out to the streets. Astrid felt herself begin to panic a bit so instead she lifted her gaze and focused again on Rin who was looking at her expectantly. Waiting for Astrid to reveal herself. She could only hope that Rin had seen enough of the supernatural world that it wouldn't be too much for her to handle, though all things considered from the day Astrid had a feeling that she would be just fine.
"I'm not human, I don't know how much of that people aware of the supernatural actually pick up on that"
Astrid had to pause for a moment though, she was very much human, but at the same time she was beyond that. She still possessed abilities that other people could only dream of but she did not retain her grace and she was cut off from heaven. It was like she was stuck in some center universe where she couldn't actually find a place where she fit perfectly. There was really no way, however, for her to get to the point without being straight forward, so she was pretty sure that was the appropriate step to take. There was going to be no beating around the bush.
"I'm an angel of the Lord. At least I was, I am one of the fallen now. I have not been on Earth terribly long, but I came to Earth and became a hunter. Hoping to at least, some way continue to serve as I once had. I have no connection to heaven but I do still have some of my powers. I may not be of use to my father anymore, but I can be of some use to you."
Astrid glanced around to make sure everyone was busy with their own business, and she pulled out her blade and set in on the table in front of them, she also pulled out a knife that was useful in taking care of demons.
"Two extremes and I can help you defend yourself against both. One will help you against demons, and the other will help you against angels. I am aware that you are a special persons, with more abilities then the average human and I know that the supernatural will be interested in you. All sides."
