| POWERS & ABILITIES: Iaras are similar to Sirens in the Greek mythology. There are some differences though. Iaras originated in Brazil. The way an Iara finds a man is she can feel what is in his soul. She can feel his emotions and if it appeals to her likings she lures them in. Once under the spell of the Iara, a man would leave anything to live with her underwater forever, which was not necessarily a bad thing, as she was pretty and would cater for all needs of her lover for the rest of his life. She would usually give them lodgings, food, anything they wanted and in return they would do anything for her, even if that meant killing someone which it usually did. Iaras have very short tempers. If you anger them it is most likely that you will die. At this time the Iara will use her lover to do the dirty work while she sits back and watches. But as the Iaras are immortal and their lovers are not they are constantly luring men into their grasps. Most of the time an Iara will get bored with their lovers and rather letting them go they lure them into the deep depths of the water promising them that they will be able to breath and then they drown them. If you find some way to block your ears from hearing it, the Iaras song is useless but it is very difficult to do so. There are some rumors of a substance that blocks the ear canal from the song. There is tell of a Hunter in the United States that has discovered this very substance. An Iara only takes human men into her grasp because they are very lonely creatures and they need to be adored and loved. If threatened with loneliness, by someone taking their lovers away for example, an Iara will do one of either two things. She will fall into a deep depression where she is at her most vulnerable or, she will go into an explosive rage. The Iara must also carry water from the place it was born with it everywhere. If that water is taken away the Iara becomes weak and must return to its birthplace. If it does not return to its birthplace in the matter of a week it will die. During that time period its skin will dry out and the effects of aging will be shown on the body and the skin. Once the week ends if the Iara still has not made it to its birthplace the body will eventually disintegrate and turn to ash. |
| HISTORY: The first thing Yaritza remembers is the touch of cool, refreshing water on her newborn skin. She remembers how it felt as her mother cradled her in the deep parts of a small lake. She remembers watching the fish swim all around and the sunlight glittering off the surface of the water. Those are her first memories of life. Those are her most treasured ones. Yaritza was born in the small lake deep in the jungles of Brazil. A lake so well covered and protected that without some training and a machete you would never be able to reach it. Growing up as an Iara is different from anything else. Yes she looked like the humans, but she grew up in the deep parts of that lake. The reed beds were her playground; the fish her friends. Her mother taught her everything she knew about surviving this world. She taught her how to sing and how to lure men into her grasp. She taught her how to manipulate people into giving her everything she wanted. Yaritza learned all she needed to know if not more from her mother. So needless to say but Yaritza had an interesting childhood. Once she turned sixteen her mother took her to a smaller lake not that far from the old one but more accessible for the humans. Her mother sat her on a rock and told her to lure a man in. Once she did he would be hers for the rest of his life. He would be her lover. Yaritza was scared. She had never actually lured a man into her grasp before. But it was now or never. Yaritza sat on the rock for what seemed like hours until finally a lone hiker stumbled across the small lake. He saw Yaritza lounging on the rock. He didn't think anything of it until she started to sing. It was all over then. She had finally gotten a lover of her very own. After that eventful day Yaritza lived at that lake. After one lover died she would wait for another. She lived in the jungle for two centuries. Until one day she realized she wanted more. The love of one man wasn't enough for her. She needed more. So after her last lover died she went to the lake she was born in. She took a small bottle and filled it with water. She then tied it to a leather string and tied it around her neck. She said goodbye to her home and her mother and left. She traveled for a couple months until she came to Rio de Janeiro. The city was huge and thriving. There were so many people and everywhere Yaritza went she could see looks of admiration on peoples faces. This was where she was meant to be. She bought a place close to the ocean and started her life in Rio. Soon she bought a small building and started renovations on a small night club. After it was finished she opened it to the public and it was an instant hit. She started gathering lovers in the club. She was adored there. She had found her home. After a couple years of living in Rio she had found many lovers. Yaritza gets bored easily no most of her lovers met a watery death. Seeing as the disappearances would eventually attract the attention of the local police, and she did not want to leave just yet, she went to talk to the police herself. After the meeting with the Chief of the police station Yaritza had no worries since the chief was under her spell now. Yaritza was living the dream in Rio. She had people who adored her, a booming business, all the lovers she could want, and she didn't have to worry about the police. She was happy. Until a rumor came that somewhere in the United States a Hunter had found a substance that rendered the Iara's song useless. Well, Iara couldn't have that, now could she? So she is making plans to travel to the United States to find this Hunter and kill him before he can tell others of this substance, if he hasn't already. |
