Her main concern is Jo’s safety because of her over-protective nature and therefore she forbids her daughter to go on hunts at first until she realizes she can’t stop her and decides to become her hunting partner to keep her safe.

HISTORY:
Ellen was an old friend of John Winchester, and wife of hunter William Anthony Harvelle and the mother of Jo Harvelle. She runs Harvelle’s Roadhouse-a saloon and bar frequented by other hunters. Her husband was killed in 1995 while on a hunt with John Winchester.
After coming into contact with the Winchester boys, Ellen grows closer with them and they help each other on many hunts with her even growing attached to them and becoming a mother-like figure to Sam and Dean.

Ellen couldn’t help but sigh. Those boys were going to get themselves killed one day. It had gotten harder and harder to tolerate their crazy antics but she supposed she ought to let them be- considering she wasn’t their mother. She had her own issues to deal with anyway with Jo wanting to leave the place and all.
Ellen frowned, wiping off the counter of the bar while trying to ignore the smart-ass hunters in the corner that were currently trying to pick Jo up. She had raised her daughter smart enough to be able to realize what they were after and tough enough to stand up for herself. That little itch of over-protectiveness reared its head but Ellen pushed it down. If Jo really did need any help she was right there for her so it wouldn’t be a problem.
